The mother of invention
The role that designers can play has not been widely considered, but a new exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum in Dundee, UK, called Now accepting contactless, makes a strong case that innovative design has a substantial role to play when managing a pandemic. The risk of exposure to blood or fluid-borne infections that health-care workers face when performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation has been highlighted by the pandemic, thus inspiring the development of the Tayside hood, which allows medical personnel to perform airway resuscitation safely. The exhibition space is open plan, allowing people to use it while maintaining a safe distance from other people, and the area outside the museum has been designed in such a way to encourage children to play without coming into too close contact with one another.
The face of war: Trauma analysis of a mass grave from the Battle of Lützen (1632)
Contemporary accounts of battles are often incomplete or even erroneous because they reflect the-often biased-viewpoints of the authors. Battlefield archaeology faces the task of compiling an historical analysis of a battle and of gathering all the available facts. Besides cultural historical evidence and artefacts, the human remains of those who have fallen in battle also provide invaluable information. In studying mass graves from a military context, the injury types and patterns are significant. They allow us to reconstruct the circumstances surrounding the soldiers' deaths and provide information on the hostilities that occurred on the battlefield. One such mass grave was discovered in 2011 at Lützen, Saxony-Anhalt (Germany). Based on its geographical location and on the results obtained from archaeological examinations carried out in the area, the grave could be dated to the Thirty Years War (1618-1648). Further archaeological research confirmed that the dead had been soldiers from the Battle of Lützen (1632). The mass grave was block-lifted and then comprehensively examined at the State Museum of Prehistory in Halle (Saale). As well as osteological examinations to determine age, sex, height, state of health, i.e. diseases or injuries, imaging methods were also employed and histological and isotopic analyses carried out. The focus of this study was on the injuries sustained by the soldiers both prior to and during the battle. The results revealed that the 47 deceased had been between the ages of 15 and 50 when they died. Numerous healed injuries showed that the men had often been involved in violent encounters. Approximately three in every four soldiers had injuries that could have been fatal. Wounds inflicted by handguns, particularly to the skull, were predominant. The integrative analysis of the archaeological and anthropological data allowed us to conclude that the majority had been killed during a cavalry attack.
Increasing Personnel Competencies in Museums with the Use of Auditing and Controlling
Society is constantly developing and museums must respond to this. Museums’ main tasks include conservation of humanity’s history, which puts high demands on museum staff. The level of care for cultural heritage depends on the quality of staff at the given museums. Thus, HR management can be perceived as a soft museum discipline that can be supplemented with hard management approaches. From here, certain research questions arise, such as: What are the vital factors for HR management in museums, or how can personnel competencies development be continuously improved? The research aim is, therefore, to define for museums the vital factors for personnel competencies development with an emphasis on efficiency improvement. The defined task will be completed using a questionnaire together with a multipoint Likert scale. The research was conducted on a sample of n = 810 museums in EU 27. A personnel competencies model was constructed based on the statistical analysis and using stepwise regression, which points to the importance of auditing and controlling approaches in the management of museums. The outcomes point to a lower than expected impact of the number of employees and the quality of management on the personnel competencies development. The correlation analysis of the variables shows interesting relations that should be used for the development of performance in museums.
Design Education

Virtual Humans for Learning
Virtual humans are computer‐generated characters designed to look and behave like real people. Studies have shown that virtual humans can mimic many of the social effects that one finds in human‐human interactions such as creating rapport, and people respond to virtual humans in ways that are similar to how they respond to real people. We believe that virtual humans represent a new metaphor for interacting with computers, one in which working with a computer becomes much like interacting with a person and this can bring social elements to the interaction that are not easily supported with conventional interfaces. We present two systems that embody these ideas. The first, the twins are virtual docents in the Museum of Science, Boston, designed to engage visitors and raise their awareness and knowledge of science. The second, Sim‐Coach, uses an empathetic virtual human to provide veterans and their families with information about PTSD and depression.
